Wu is a professor with a Ph.D. and a doctoral supervisor (academic doctorate and specialized doctorate). He serves as Director of the School's Academic Committee, Head of the University's Graduate Teaching Steering Group, and Director of the Institute of Applied Linguistics. He is engaged in linguistics and applied linguistics, international Chinese language education, second language acquisition, theory and pedagogy of teaching Chinese as a second/foreign language, training and development of Chinese language teachers, and Chinese language education. He has published more than 160 papers and dozens of books, dictionaries and textbooks. In 2002, he was awarded National Outstanding TCFL Teacher.

He is the principal investigator of multiple key projects of National Social Science Fund, projects of Humanities and Social Science of the Ministry of Education, and key projects of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education.
Part-time Positions: Member of the Expert Advisory Committee of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Vice President and Secretary General of Shanghai Chinese Association, Expert of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education, Distinguished Expert/Head of the Expert Group of Chinese Language Education Research Center of Shanghai Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, Member of the Professional Committee for Teacher Development of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, and Director of the International Society for the History of Chinese Language Education. He is an adjunct professor, visiting professor or part-time researcher of many universities in China, and serves as editorial board member of more than ten journals including Chinese Teaching In The World, TCSOL Studies, and Journal of International Chinese Language Education (Hong Kong).
He has been invited to give lectures in the US, Italy, France, Vietnam, Chile, Argentina, Malaysia, Singapore, Belgium, Japan and other countries, as well as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
